It's something I get asked every few days, as if it is a mystery on the internet, which misleads people to believe differently. I'm here to help you solve this mystery with a few facts & instances.
As a professional makeup artist, I believe in using both only because I need sponges/puffs/ blenders for different purposes and I need brushes for other. I believe it makes me work more efficiently when I use both mediums.
Whereas, for you, who is also a person whose doing makeup on yourself daily or regularly or even once in a while, here's how you can pick what's better for you:
Try out both mediums first, and see what's easier for your hand to get a grip on faster. Brushes tend to be easier at first, but you need to perfect the blending if you're using brushes for the first time. Blender sponges typically eat up a lot of your product, and it sometimes feels like the product is getting removed if you blend it out too much.
Check how much time you can dedicate to doing makeup on yourself. If you have less time, use blender sponges but if you have a little more, then invest in learning how to using brushes properly as this is a one-time learning for you.
Check how much coverage you want - if you prefer lighter & a more natural coverage, go for blender sponges but if you're looking to have a medium to full coverage, brushes will be more useful for you in layering the products well.
Lastly, if you're a complete beginner to blending and applying makeup - get a professional to guide you on what to use where. I offer personalized makeup classes, online & offline.
For eye makeup, never attempt using sponges or puffs on the eyes. You NEED to use the correct eye brushes for your eye makeup before it becomes a mess. Sponges or puffs will not give you the effect you want.
